I have had this experience with clients as well. I actually asked someone one time if they wanted to live after receiving a terminal kidney disease diagnosis and they were able to honestly answer, no. It was remarkable. They went through the treatments and all the motions for their family and relationships, but in private we used the time to tend to their soul and prepare them to pass. We aren't meant to survive everything, we don't even have to fight it if we don't want to. Permission to surrender to death is a huge gift. And knowing what we feel as healers and guides is paramount to helping people navigate the process.
Standing at the doorway of grief for my grandmother’s impending passing now, your words heal and soothe a part of me I had not been able to articulate. Thank you.
Your article is activating another question I have had. I remember when one of my closest friends announced to me that she was planning to end her life. At the time, it didn't feel like a call for help. It felt sovereign and I wrestled with the idea of doing all I could to get her to stay with us. I thought to myself: who am I to tell her what to do with her life? Is it not selfish of us? What is it that pushes us to 'force' people to live even if they no longer want to? But was it her spirit that wanted to go or another part of her? She is still with us today and I still don;t know. I wish there was a space where we could talk about death in such depth.
I knew I'd cry. My tears were tears of both sadness and relief. I remember her last post on FB, it was one of acceptance. There was humor and I was still sad, for my self and for her son. And there is a deep resonance in my body upon reading your words. One that my intellect cannot yet fully grasp. Thank you.
Beautiful- I too have seen this pattern in people before they pass on- it is humbling and almost awe inspiring. How deeply we can relate to one another in this realm and truly see in the spirit.
Incredible. You have no idea what awareness just shifted for me...a confusion of being between worlds for as far back as I have memory...confused by own pull to return to startdust despite many epic experiences as a human child, teen, young adult & adult. There has been more & more peace around my natural comfort with death discussions, reflections & intermittent longings but I had such a flash of deeper equanimity for this primoridial energy who simply wanted to stay with a grandmother who adored me but was killed tragically 2 weeks before I was born which meant I was also born into a family who wanted to give up on life or live in the past to keep her memory alive. Thank you.
